In no particular order the following 2002 grads of MHSRA were awarded almost $11,000 in scholarships. Chelsea Driedger of Cromer is a four year veteran of MHSRA competing in goat tying, barrel racing, pole bending, team roping and breakaway roping. She has represented MB at both the National & Canadian levels on several occasions and is the All Around Cowgirl for 2002. Chelsea has been on the student executive and she has been very willing to help out wherever needed. Chelsea is strong academically and plans to attend Dickinson State University to begin her studies in Pre-medical Technology. She will continue her rodeo career at the college level. Chelsea received scholarships from the Canadian Professional Rodeo Association, MHSRA, Ivomec and SimQua Ranch. Lindsay Schroeder from Souris has been a dynamic member of the MHSRA for 4 years. Her enthusiasm in everything she undertakes including academics will serve her well. Lindsay has been a competitor in poles, barrels, goat tying and represented MB as their Queen for two seasons competing in the National competition in Gillette and Springfield. The University of Alberta will welcome Lindsay to do her Bachelor of Science there this fall. Lindsay was awarded scholarships from MHSRA, PCO, Souris & Glenwood Agricultural Society, and Virden Chiropractic Centre. Good luck in your future Lindsay. Jessica Murray from Virden has been with us four years. She competed in barrel racing, pole bending, goat tying, team roping and breakaway roping. Jessica is very courteous, polite and a good sport. She has represented MB at Nationals and Canadians. She and her horse Injun had the perfect rodeo where she was entered in three events and won all three! Jessica plans to attend ACC and take business Administration. She will be a welcome addition to the business world. Jessica received scholarships from MHSRA, Twerdun Financial Group, the Hicks Family Scholarship, and a D. Nesbit family scholarship. This year’s valedictorian at Cowboy Prom was Birtle’s Derek Ashcroft. Derek’s plans include an Agribusiness course at ACC in Brandon. Derek is the second bronc rider in the Ashcroft family to graduate from MHSR. His family has been wonderful supporters of high school rodeo. Derek has been very involved in many school activities and in his community. Always with a smile, he is a good sport and very well liked by his peers. Derek was awarded scholarships from MHRSA, Murray Chev Olds and Co-op Federated Feeds. Wayne Moffat is an all-around cowboy whose passion is rodeo. He has competed in saddle bronc, bull riding and team roping. Wayne is enrolled Agribusiness Management at Lamar Community College in Colorado. . Being the all round competitor that he is, he will enjoy college rodeo and we are sure that he will succeed in all that he does. We were very happy to award Wayne with an MHSRA scholarship, a Nesbitt family scholarship and his hometown, Strathclair Rodeo Associations Scholarship. They have worked hard in their community to help high school rodeo and it would seem fitting to award it to one of their own. Congratulations Wayne. Virden’s Jolie Horn is a very dedicated and well-disciplined individual when it comes to working hard. A 3-year member of the MHSRA, Jolie was chosen for the ARIAT ACHIEVER’S AWARD based on her sportsmanship, academics, her volunteer work, both in MHSRA & her community. Jolie was always there to mark barrels, put up banners and help out. Even though she is not ranked near the top of the standings in her events of barrels and poles she is a wonderful individual that made a terrific difference. Other scholarships from MHSRA, Shoal Lake Vet Clinic, Dreidger Family, and D. Nesbitt Family were awarded to Jolie. Chad Kinsley, another three year MHSRA student calls Minto home. Raised on a farm Chad has enjoyed 4-H, hockey, and racing his ATV. He has a special interest in working on cars, trucks, motorbikes and auto bodywork. His proposed course of study is an Automotive Technician. His plan is to go to Red river Community College and to continue in his calf and team roping. Chad received the MB Equine Ranchers’ Scholarship, an MHRSA Scholarship and the Paul’s Hauling Scholarship. Perhaps “Paul” will require his expertise down the road. First year member, Courtney Forsyth, comes from Virden. Courtney has enjoyed her very short time with MHSR. It is unfortunate that she wasn’t a member earlier as she has a lot of enthusiasm for the sport and certainly would have made an impact on the association. Courtney is planning to go into the field of education at Brandon University. She comes highly recommended from her teachers so there is good indication that she will make a great teacher. Courtney has also been involved with the Clydesdale industry. Courtney was awarded an MHSRA Scholarship for her contributions. Thomas Hagon, another four-year member from Virden is a calf roper, steer wrestler and team roper. He was chosen by the Cinch team to be one of the captains this year. Besides rodeo Thomas enjoys snow boarding and hunting. In the arena he gives each of his events his best shot and is helpful to younger students. Outside the arena he is friendly and outgoing. His plans include going to a community college to take a course in agri-business. For his efforts in MHSRA he was awarded the Stonewall Farms Scholarship, a Nesbitt Family Scholarship and a MHSRA Scholarship. Jason Mooney has been accepted into Assiniboine Community College in Agribusiness. After four years in MHSRA, competing in team roping, Jason is respected as a competitor, a quiet person who lends a hand and is a conscientious student. Jason graduated with both “High School;” and “Technology” (Power Mechanics) Diplomas. Jason received a MHSRA Scholarship and the Monsanto Scholarship. Jack Ketel : bull rider, bareback rider, and honours student throughout high school! Olds College is reserving a seat for him in Agriculture Production Management with a Livestock major. Jack is also planning to be a certified farrier as well, and we know there is a shortage of them! Jack has served on the student executive and as an event director. He is an active helper in his community. He is very outgoing, has a positive attitude and in light of his academic performance and rodeo results, Jack received the Canadian Professional Rodeo Association Scholarship, the Cando Scholarship and a Nesbitt Family Scholarship. Stuart Lambert would also like to take the Advanced Farrier Science course at Olds, AB. Stuart is the 3rd child in the Lambert family following Chas and Holly Lee to graduate from MHSRA. Brother Zane has finished his rookie year. Stuart is a very quiet, soft spoken young man who enjoys people of all ages. Stuart’s four years with MHSRA were spent team roping and calf roping. Stuart was awarded a MHSRA Scholarship, the Morningstar Metals Scholarship and the Dauphin Legion Scholarship. All the best in your future endeavours Stuart. Last but certainly not least is Boissevain’s Laura Hicks! Breakaway roper, goat tier, and team roper this young lady hung up and took down more banners than anyone in her three years. This winter she was the organizer of our very successful New year’s party. Besides her efforts in high school rodeo Laura has logged many volunteer hours in her community- 4-H, Turtle Mtn team ropers, her school and her church. She has been accepted at Lakeland College in Vermilion, AB for a two-year diploma course in Herd Health technology. For her community efforts Laura was awarded the MB Agricultural Scholarship as well as a MHSRA Scholarship, Enbridge Scholarship and the Onanole Rodeo Association Scholarship. Congratulations Laura. Also graduating from MHSRA this year, but not applying for scholarships were bull riders Travis Lowen of Russell a four year member, Kelly Robertson of Strathclair, and Aaron Kachan of Shoal Lake, both two year members. Travis was awarded the Cabella’s Cowboy of the Year Award at finals and represented MB at Nationals in his rookie year! To all the grads we wish you well in your future endeavours and we recognize that scholarships are for the future, awards were for past accomplishments.
